BP Oil Leak President Barack Obama To Unveil New Safety Measures At Press Conference

An angry President Barack Obama says the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a “tremendous catastrophe” – but BP will meet the cost of the disaster. The President, who is outlining the measures he will take, said he was “angry” every day the leak continued and held BP solely responsible for a spill that is being called the worst in US history. But he rejected claims his administration had been too slow in its response. He said others could judge if the response was similar to George Bush’s reaction to Hurricane Katrina, which was criticised for its tardiness. The President said he was suspending planned exploration drilling off the coasts of the states of Alaska and Virginia and on 33 wells currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico – and the US government would have to OK everything BP does to stem the leak. “We’re exploring any reasonable strategies to try and save the Gulf from a spill that may otherwise last until the relief wells are finished and that’s a process that could take months,” Mr Obama told a news conference, his first for nearly a year. He criticised a “scandalously close relationship” between oil companies and regulators. After several failed attempts to plug the leak, BP has been using the “top kill” procedure, which involves pumping mud and cement into the oil well. Marcia McNutt, of the US Geological Survey, says the amount of oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon has eclipsed the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster, and could be flowing at a rate nearly
